Overview of Girl Scout Program

Overview of Girl Scout Program (3)

The Girl Scout program can change the way girls see the world and their place in it. Girls learn the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal setting, the spirit of teamwork, and the thrill of accomplishment. The Girl Scout program is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law, the Three Keys to leadership of discover, connect and take action, and the Three Processes of girl-led, learn by doing, and cooperative learning.

Through a working partnership with adult leaders and advisors, Girl Scouts encourages girls to develop qualities of responsible citizenship, cross-cultural understanding, service to the community and to her own religion, as well as positive interaction with her family and friends. These are used to lay a foundation for responsible action as women. Girl Scout program is carried out in many different settings in the troop, in the community, in a wide variety of outdoor settings, through service unit events, council sponsored programs, and national and international trips.

In Motion Program Guide

Council programs provide an opportunity for girls to experience Girl Scouting beyond the troop and with any of the flexible pathways. By developing collaborations with local community resources, the council can provide programs that often are not available at the troop or service unit level. Girls come together from all areas of the council to enjoy the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. The In Motion Program Guide has three editions published each year (Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring, and Summer), and gives details of the many program opportunities and events offered.

The Girl Scout program is fun with purpose, to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.  Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) where girls discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place. Girl Scout activities take place within the safety of an all-girl environment where girls take the lead, learn by doing, and learn cooperatively.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience: What it is

There are many ways for Girl Scouts to participate, and there are many options for what they will do - earn badges, travel, earn awards, give service to their communities, and much more.  But no matter what activities Girl Scouts do, they use Three Keys:

Discover - Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.
Connect - Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally.
Take Action - Girls act to make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience: How it Works

How girls complete activities is just as important as what activities they complete.  That's why Girl Scout program uses three processes that give girls the opportunities to practice and develop leadership.

Girl-Led - Girls in every level take an active role in deciding what, where, when, why, and how they'll do activities.  This process, as part of an adult-girl partnership, supports girls' empowerment and decision-making abilities.
Learn By Doing - Hands-on learning engages girls in an ongoing cycle of action and reflection, as they master skills and learn new concepts.  This learning is more memorable and meaningful.
Cooperative Learning - Girls share knowledge, skills, and experiences in an atmosphere of respect and cooperation.  Girls work together to meet common goals, while engaging individual girls' talents and creating a sense of belonging.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience - Why it's Important

Whichever Pathway or activities girls choose in Girl Scouting, the programs are tied to one of 15 short-term outcomes to ensure eveyr girl receives a quality leadership experience.  The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is what leadership "looks like" for girls and empowers them to:

Discover

  • Develop a strong sense of self
  • Develop positive values
  • Gain practical life skills
  • Seek challenges in the world
  • Develop critical thinking
Connect

  • Develop healthy relationships
  • Promote cooperation and team building
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Advance diversity in a multicultural world
  • Feel connected to their communities, locally and globally
Take Action

  • Advocate for themselves and others
  • Educate and inspire others to act
  • Feel empowered to make a difference in the world

Transforming Leadership, a book published by GSUSA, outlines the Discover-Connect-Take Action framework of the 15 outcomes, and helps adults to understand how girls will benefit from the Girl Scout Leadership Experience now and in the future.
