Pathways

Pathways (8)

Can members participate in more than one pathway?

Absolutely! Girls are encouraged to build their own leadership experience by choosing any and all pathways that interest them.  All girls are welcome to all pathways.

How do individually registered girls fit into the proposed framework?

Individually-registered girls (girls who are not members of troops) and adults can participate in any pathway. When a girl or adult joins the organization, she or he becomes a Girl Scout member. All members can choose any one, all, or some of the pathways to participate in within a single year.

What is the difference between the Events Pathway and recruitment events?

All programs delivered in the Events Pathway incorporate the Discover-Connect-Take Action keys to leadership and the girl-led, learning by doing, and cooperative learning processes. To join the Events Pathway, all girls must be registered. The Events Pathway is a core Girl Scout experience where the intent of participation is in multiple events throughout the year. To participate in recruitment events, membership is not required. The intent of a recruitment event is to demonstrate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to potential members. Potential members will learn about the ways to participate in Girl Scouts at recruitment events.

Are girls who only participate in short-term pathways considered "real" Girl Scouts?

Yes! No matter which pathway a girl chooses, she is a Girl Scout. According to the Blue Book of Basic Documents 2006, the only requirements for membership are that girls are in grades Kindergarten–12, accept the Promise and Law, and pay annual membership dues.  Once they have become Girl Scouts, it's up to girls how they want to participate.

How will outcomes differ between pathways?

The goal of measuring outcomes is to give us the ability to understand the effect that the Girl Scout Leadership experience has on girls. The longer a girl participates in Girl Scouting, the greater the effect the outcomes will have on her.

Participating in Product Sales Program Activities

All girl members in any pathway may participate in council-sponsored product sales program activities, under volunteer supervision. GSGST provides training on the procedures to follow during each sale through a cascading staff and volunteer effort. The council also establishes guidelines and procedures for conducting the sale and determines how the proceeds and recognition system will be managed for girls in each pathway.

The Virtual Pathway offers an opportunity to connect girls in different communities; regionally, nationally, and internationally! Girls can participate in Girl Scouting regardless of their geographic location.

Virtual Girl Scouts provide interactive, high-quality program activities in a safe, secure, online environment offered through a Web-based platform developed by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). If you are interested in virtual Girl Scout activities, be sure to include your e-mail address on the membership registration form!
The Virtual Pathway is still in development. When completed, the pathway will be consistent with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) and delivered by virtual volunteers.
Ready for interactive online fun now? Visit Girl Scouts for Girls to play games, take a poll, send an e-card, and more!
Have you taken the Internet Safety Pledge?  Every Girl Scout should start with the safety pledge before going online.

The Troop Pathway offers girls an opportunity to work with the same group of girls in their own grade level, over a span of three to twelve months, in partnership with two or more appointed adult advisors. Girls may join at any time during the membership year.

The troop/group meets for the enjoyment and benefit of the girls and meetings are built around the girls' ideas. Girl planning, in partnership with adult volunteers help to develop a team relationship, making space for the development of leadership skills, and allowing girls to benefit from the guidance, mentoring, and coaching of caring adults.

Note: A troop that also goes camping or travels as a group is still operating in the troop pathway (not the camp or travel pathways).

Nationally and Internationally hosted Destinations

Destinations are nationally and internationally hosted travel opportunities for girls.  Trips can take girls kayaking off the coast of Costa Rica, feeding pandas in Hong Kong, hiking into the Grand Canyon, exploring the Galapagos Islands, and many other adventures!  Destination opportunities are announced each year on the Girl Scouts of the USA website in September or October.  Early registration deadline is before Thanksgiving each year, but enrollment may be extended on many trips until spring, if spaces are still available.    Follow this link to see what adventures are awaiting you!

The Travel Committee

Many of the travel opportunities currently offered by Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas are planned and coordinated by volunteers on the council's Travel Pathway Committee.  Members of this committee oversee that travel opportunities meet safety guidelines, incorporate the Girl Leadership Experience, represent a progression of travel experience, and introduce girls to new cultures and experiences. Committee members are also asked to use their travel experience as chaperones for travel opportunities. The Series Pathway offers activities for the same group of participating girls, scheduled over six to eight weeks, relating to a specific theme or purpose. Series are developed with the intent that each registered participant attend all sessions scheduled throughout the course of the offering, because sessions are designed so that each day builds towards the next and culminates upon the delivery of the last session activity.

Series are thematic in nature and developed to support the council's program initiatives in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), healthy living, financial literacy, environmental awareness, as well as Girl Scout signature programs such as leadership journeys, and Uniquely Me!  The Be a Friend First (BFF) series equips middle school girls with the knowledge and power to prevent, recognize, and address bullying among their peers.

All event programs are based on the following standards:

•  Be mission-driven to develop girls of courage, character, and confidence

•  Align to the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience

•  Adhere to all local and national safety standards

•  Be relevant and accessible to all populations

•  Provide opportunities for continuous involvement

•  Are developed and facilitated by volunteers in partnership with council professional staff

•  Provide consistent learning opportunities for both girls and adults

Click here to be directed to the In Motion Program Guide, for descriptions of available series programs.

The Event Pathway offers a variety of scheduled activities that are open to all girls by grade level. Girls can choose to participate in as many events as they like, exploring their skills and interests along the way in a variety of thematic areas such as community service, cultural arts, overnighters, healthy living, math and science, aquatics, Go Green, leadership development, and much more. Girls get the necessary guidance from adult volunteers and council staff to develop their skills and understand how those skills can be used to make a difference in the world.

What does camp do for girls?

Camp programs encourage girls to develop independence, self-reliance, outdoor living skills, problem solving, and community living skills.  In an outdoor environment, under the supervision of supportive adults, girls take responsibility for their daily tasks, ranging from keeping a clean living area to preparing dinner in the outdoors.  Camp programs build girls' self-confidence and teach them to overcome challenges.

Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas offers day-only, one-night, weekend, and resident camp programs so that girls use progression to build their comfort with camping.

Look for day, weekend, and week-long camp opportunities in the In Motion Program Guide.

Where do we camp?

Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas has two beautiful camps, Camp Bayview near Los Fresnos, and Camp Green Hill near Mathis.  As girls develop their camping skills, they can explore other camp locations such as state parks, independent camp sites, national parks, and other approved locations.

Find the path that's right for you

Pathways are flexible and nationally consistent ways for girls and adults to participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

When a girl or an adult joins the organization, she or he becomes a Girl Scout member. Girls can choose any one, all, or some of these pathways -- camp, events, series, travel, troops, and virtual, within a single school year.

The flexibility of Pathways will allow adults to participate in Girl Scouting based on their lifestyle and availability -- whether the adult prefers to partner directly with girls throughout a membership year, participate for only a few weeks or months, or work with other adults in a variety of roles.

What does Pathways mean for girls and adults everywhere?

             •    Membership flexibility and participation options

Increased volunteer retention and recruitment -- more adults to serve and support more girl members

Increased flexibility encourages more girls to join Girl Scouting

Increased interest from adults who desire to provide direct service to girls through more short term volunteer opportunities

Current girl and adult members can remain with the organization longer because of the flexible ways to join and volunteer
