Early Bird registration gives current Girl Scouts and troops/groups the opportunity to register early for the upcoming Girl Scout year (October 2013 through September 2014) before the fall rush! Re-register your Girl Scout membership for the upcoming year today! Please note that dues have increased to $15/member, $195/graduating girl lifetime membership dues and $375/lifetime membership dues.

Important information regarding dues increase

At the 51st Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) National Council Session in 2008, the National Board of Directors asked that we anticipate a membership dues increase from $12 per girl to $15 for the 2013-2014 membership year. This message is intended to inform members of that change.

The new membership fee will be incorporated in the registration process beginning with 2014 Early Bird registration this spring. The last dues increase was in 2009. Because of feedback from volunteers, we know where our members want us to focus our resources over the next few years. Every dollar of the membership dues is sent to GSUSA to help support tools for delivery of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, accident insurance to cover members participating in approved activities and technology that makes joining Girl Scouts fast and easy.

At $1.25 per month, Girl Scouting is an incredible value. Girls who participate in Girl Scouts graduate high school and go to college at a greater rate. As adults, they become more active in their communities and earn more income over a lifetime. For those who stay in Girl Scouts for three or more years, these success indicators soar.

We will continue to offer financial assistance to families who may need to cover the cost of membership. Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas is committed to providing a positive experience to every girl who wants to be a Girl Scout.

As Girl Scouting grows, so does the need to expand services in order to provide the best possible leadership opportunities for all members. Thank you for your investment in the future of our girls.

The Girl Scout program is fun with purpose, to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.  Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) where girls discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place. Girl Scout activities take place within the safety of an all-girl environment where girls take the lead, learn by doing, and learn cooperatively.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience: What it is

There are many ways for Girl Scouts to participate, and there are many options for what they will do - earn badges, travel, earn awards, give service to their communities, and much more.  But no matter what activities Girl Scouts do, they use Three Keys:

Discover - Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.
Connect - Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally.
Take Action - Girls act to make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience: How it Works

How girls complete activities is just as important as what activities they complete.  That's why Girl Scout program uses three processes that give girls the opportunities to practice and develop leadership.

Girl-Led - Girls in every level take an active role in deciding what, where, when, why, and how they'll do activities.  This process, as part of an adult-girl partnership, supports girls' empowerment and decision-making abilities.
Learn By Doing - Hands-on learning engages girls in an ongoing cycle of action and reflection, as they master skills and learn new concepts.  This learning is more memorable and meaningful.
Cooperative Learning - Girls share knowledge, skills, and experiences in an atmosphere of respect and cooperation.  Girls work together to meet common goals, while engaging individual girls' talents and creating a sense of belonging.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience - Why it's Important

Whichever Pathway or activities girls choose in Girl Scouting, the programs are tied to one of 15 short-term outcomes to ensure eveyr girl receives a quality leadership experience.  The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is what leadership "looks like" for girls and empowers them to:

Discover

  • Develop a strong sense of self
  • Develop positive values
  • Gain practical life skills
  • Seek challenges in the world
  • Develop critical thinking
Connect

  • Develop healthy relationships
  • Promote cooperation and team building
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Advance diversity in a multicultural world
  • Feel connected to their communities, locally and globally
Take Action

  • Identify community needs
  • Become resourceful problem solvers
  • Advocate for themselves and others
  • Educate and inspire others to act
  • Feel empowered to make a difference in the world

Transforming Leadership, a book published by GSUSA, outlines the Discover-Connect-Take Action framework of the 15 outcomes, and helps adults to understand how girls will benefit from the Girl Scout Leadership Experience now and in the future.

The Girl Scout Promise and Law are shared by every member of Girl Scouting. The Girl Scout Promise is the way Girl Scouts agree to act every day toward one another and other people, and the Girl Scout Law outlines a way to act towards one another and the world.

The Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is a colorful, easy-to-use binder for girls at each program level.  It's includes the handbook and badges, plus a "My Girl Scouts" section for girls to find fun activities and ways to customize their Girl Scout experience.

The book has three main sections:

  1. Girl Scout Handbook to introduce girls to traditions, stories, and uniforms, as well as awards they are eligible to earn at their level
  2. Girl Scout Badges that lists requirements for earning Legacy, Cookie Program, and Financial Literacy badges, with room for girls to insert additional skill-building badge requirements according to their interests
  3. My Girl Scouts with fun resources for bringing their Girl Scout experience to life, and where girls can insert their own records of their Girl Scout experience
