Community Service is one of the core values of Girl Scouting.  Volunteers and Girl Scouts of all ages are encouraged to participate in service projects that will have a real impact on their communities.  Girls can choose projects that reflect their own interests, large or small, and work as individuals or as a group.  It is especially important for all adult volunteers to coach girls on identifying local needs they care about and guide girls in reflecting on what they’re learning.  To apply the Discover, Connect, and Take Action keys, volunteers ensure that girls develop leadership values and skills while reaching out to others.  By continuing our long tradition of helping others, we can fulfill the Girl Scout mission in a visible way in our communities.

Project Undercover 2

Project Undercover is the council's annual community service project conducted in October of each year and culminating on Make a Difference Day.  The project benefits children in the care of Texas Department of Family Protective Services by collecint donations of an often overlooked necessity - underclothing.  Donations of underwear, diapers, socks, etc., are collected and donated to local DFPS locations.

 jumptojourneys

There are worlds of fun waiting in the Journey programs, and now there’s a great way for girls and volunteers to jump into the leadership activities designed to boost girls’ confidence, help them become resourceful problem solvers, develop healthy relationships, and much more!

Jump to Journey Check-out Kits are available in all service centers.   Check-Out kits have supplies necessary to complete one requirement of the Jump to Journeys patch program—the Journey Taster activities.  Leave a $25 deposit at the council to check out the box, and then return the box with all supplies inside to have your deposit returned to you.

FreeBeingMe

Images of girls and women in the media are of great interest to girls today.  Girl Scouts of the USA, in partnership with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and  Dove, has launched Free Being Me,a leadership initiative focused on helping girls better understand global definitions of beauty, define beauty for themselves and boost their self-confidence in the process.  This program helps girls understand from a global perspective that a greater diversity of beauty exists and give them opportunity to take action to promote this diversity to girls locally and globally.  Importantly, Free Being Me can be used to introduce or enhance girls' experiences along the It's Your Story - Tell It! leadership Journey series.

What does camp do for girls?

Camp programs encourage girls to develop independence, self-reliance, outdoor living skills, problem solving, and community living skills.  In an outdoor environment, under the supervision of supportive adults, girls take responsibility for their daily tasks, ranging from keeping a clean living area to preparing dinner in the outdoors.  Camp programs build girls' self-confidence and teach them to overcome challenges.

Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas offers day-only, one-night, weekend, and resident camp programs so that girls use progression to build their comfort with camping.

Look for day, weekend, and week-long camp opportunities in the In Motion Program Guide by cilcking here.

 Where do we camp?

Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas has two beautiful camps, Camp Bayview near Los Fresnos, and Camp Green Hill near Mathis.  As girls develop their camping skills, they can explore other camp locations such as state parks, independent camp sites, national parks, and other approved locations.
