Leadership Opportunities

Teen Mentoring Awards

When Girl Scouts guide younger girls or teach them something that they know, they are acting as a mentor. There are many opportunities for Girl Scout Cadettes, Senors and Ambassadors to help younger Girl Scouts by sharing their skills, passion and experience.

Cadette Program Aide

The Cadette Program Aide training is designed to foster the development of basic leadership skills and gives girls a basis for working with younger girls. Topics include basic understanding of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, Journey program, activity ideas and how to create high quality experience. Additionally, participants will learn about the developmental characteristics of younger girls, group dynamics and safety.

Requirements to earn the Cadette Program Aide Award:

  • Earn a Leader in Action (LiA) award
  • Complete council-designed leadership training. Part of the leadership course training will involve learning to work with children, and gaining a deeper understanding of a specialty such as science, art, the outdoors, or adapting activities for girls with disabilities.
  • Work directly with younger girls over six activity sessions. This might be assisting girls on Journey activities (in addition to what you did for your Lia), badge activities, or other sessions. Or work with a group, at a meeting, day camp, or during a special council event.

Leader in Action

A Leader in Action (LiA) award can be earned by assisting a Girl Scout Brownie group on any of their National Leadership Journeys. There are three different LiA awards, one for each of the Journey series: It’s Your World -- Change It!, It’s Your Planet -- Love It!, and It’s Your Story --Tell It!
To earn an LiA Award, complete the following steps:

  • Share organization skills.
  • Share special talents.
  • Teach Brownies something important from their journey.
  • Reflect on the experience.

Counselor-in-Training II

The newly named Volunteer-inTraining award replaces the Leader in Training award and is earned by Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors who would like to mentor a Girl Scout Daisy, Brownie, Junior or Cadette group outside of the camp experience.
